Ubuntu-12.04 Installation

1. Prerequisites

2. Installation Part

  • Insert your Ubuntu install media and boot from it. Select your language:

  • Then select Install Ubuntu Server:

  • Here Choose language again :

  • Then select your location:

  • If you've selected an uncommon combination of language and location, the installer might tell you that there is no locale defined for this combination; in this case you have to select the locale manually. We have selected en_US.UTF-8 here:

  • Choose a keyboard layout next

  • The installer checks the installation media, system hardware, and configures the network with DHCP if there is a DHCP server in the network:

  • Enter the hostname, what we are using here is server1.how2install.in, so I enter server1:

  • Create a user, like the user Administrator with the user name administrator

  • I don't need an encrypted home directory, so I choose No here:

  • If the installer detected correct time zone then select Yes, otherwise No:

  • Now you have to partition your hard disk. Here we've selected Guided - if you know what you're doing, you can also set up your partitions manually).

  • Select the disk that you want to partition:

  • When you're asked Write the changes to disks and configure LVM,then select Yes:

  • If you have selected Guided - use entire disk and set up LVM, it will automatically setup default layout using lvm

  • Choose Yes when asked for write the changes to disks:

  • Afterwards, new partitions are being created and formatted. Now the system is being installed:

  • Next the package manager apt gets configured. Leave the HTTP proxy line empty:

  • Just Click Continue

  • Then Choose Automatic Updates as per the requirement, Here i am using No automatic updates

  • The only item I select here is OpenSSH server so that I can immediately connect to the system with an SSH client such as PuTTY after the installation has finished:

  • The installation continues:

  • The GRUB boot loader gets installed:
